Ron & Ellie Purvis - Mt. Hood Craft
I use local wood from the Tillamook and Mt. Hood national forests along with downed trees from private homeowners to turn unique pieces of wood into vessels. I often work with partially decomposed, spalted, or uniquely cracked logs. I typically turn a rough form on the lathe while the wood is still green, store it until it’s dry, and then return to the lathe to create the final form. Depending on the results and desired style, I choose from various methods of finishing the piece. This can include the use of power and hand carving tools or a torch to create color and texture, the application of stain for color variations, or merely the application of a clear wood finish to enhance the natural color of the wood.
